Purisaki and similar detox foot patches base their functionality on the premise that the feet contain numerous sweat glands and acupuncture points that can serve as pathways for both detoxification and nutrient absorption. The theory suggests that by applying patches containing drawing agents to the feet overnight, toxins will be pulled out through the skin and captured in the patch material.

The supposed mechanism revolves around osmotic pressure, where the ingredients in the patch create a gradient that encourages the movement of toxins from inside the body toward the patch. Manufacturers often point to the visible discoloration of used patches as evidence of this detoxification process, claiming that the dark residue consists of heavy metals, metabolic wastes, and environmental toxins that have been extracted from the body.

However, the scientific consensus presents a different perspective. The human body already has sophisticated detoxification systems in place—primarily the liver and kidneys—that filter blood and remove waste products. Toxins are generally eliminated through urine, feces, and to a lesser extent, sweat. While the skin does have excretory functions, there is limited evidence that it serves as a major pathway for eliminating significant amounts of toxins.

Regarding the color change in the patches, scientific analyses have suggested that this discoloration may result from the interaction between the patch ingredients and moisture (primarily sweat) rather than from extracted toxins. When exposed to moisture, many of the natural compounds in these patches oxidize and darken, potentially creating the impression of toxin removal even in the absence of actual detoxification.
